With any merger, the acquirer’s sensitivity to matters of cultural integration is often what makes or breaks the deal. The best way to handle the cultural issues differs according to the basic rationale for the merger. When approaching a merger or an acquisition the first question you should ask yourself is one of practicality and will have significant influence on the strategy once the question is answered – is it an acquisition or is it a merger? If it is a merger there are going to be significant cultural integration issues to deal with that will differ from an acquisition position.
